On the last stop of her visit to three African states, the German Chancellor Angela Merkel inaugurated the new building of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union, which has been named in honour of His Excellency, the late President Julius Nyerere. The inauguration took place in Addis Abbba on October 11, 2016.

In her inaugural address Angela Merkel underlined the significance of the building’s name, “The African Union fosters solidarity and cohesion between African states and peoples since its foundation. The name Julius Nyerere stands exemplary for this wish.”

Angela Merkel further pointed out the challenges faced jointly by the world community during the last years mentioning the financial and economic crises, epidemics such as Ebola, terrorist activities and forced migration. “With this new building we show our shared common goal: more peace and more security in Africa” she said.

“Such challenges should be rather faced by a community of states than by one single state on its own. Thus, I am deeply convinced: Global questions need global answers.”

The building was financed by the German Foreign Ministry budget with 30 million Euro. Over the last ten years, Germany has provided a total of 500 million Euro support to the African Union, mainly in the fields of peace and security, economic integration, agriculture, infrastructure, trade, education, training and climate change.
